The President's Message

May 2018

Derek Bride

I would like to thank all of those that made it out last month. We had a great joint meeting with CT ASPE! Rodd Hyatt gave a great presentation about Solar Domestic Hot Water Systems and Applications. It was nice to meet some new faces and learn about another industry association.

This month we're looking forward to our Annual Past Presidents' Night. We're coupling this recognition with the addition of Student Night. Both past presidents and students will receive complimetnary registrations. The winners of this year's Membership Battle will also be annouced and receive recognition too.

Aside from the ceremonial items we have some interesting presentation topics in store. Ole Christensen will be presenting about CO2 Cascade Systems during the tech session. For the dinner presentation, we'll have double the subject-matter-expertise. Laurann Asklof and Chirstine Chipman will be facilitating a presentation centered around Construction Law and how it relates to engineers. This should be a good meeting for all and I hope to see everyone there.

Lastly, I would like to invite everyone to join us for our Annual Golf Outing. Registration for golfers and sponsors is now open. I highly recommend you take advantage of this fun, networking event!

Call for 2018-2019 Dinner Presentations

With only a couple dinner meetings left in the 2017-2018 year, we’re beginning to plan the 2018-2019 calendar! We’d love to hear what our members are interested in learning about next year.

If you or someone you know is interested in presenting at a dinner meeting or tech session, or if you have a topic idea, please contact Jason Urso (2017-2019 Programs Chair and President-Elect) at 413-572-3226. Presentations do not need to be complete at this point. We’re currently looking for presentation ideas and/or topics.

We are specifically looking to fill at least two meetings with consulting engineering firms showcasing one of their designs from a recent project. A field trip to the project location or a presentation of the project would be great!

We’re also considering booking a few offsite tours and/or venues. Please contact Jason Urso with possible tour locations or interesting venues too!

Rock Climbing Networking Event Recap

The YEA Rock Climbing event was fantastic. We had a total of 11 participants from all different fields and backgrounds. The event began with a group training on rock climbing safety. Participants teamed up and went through the basics of belaying, climbing, and falling. This was a great team building exercise! Participants worked together, climbing and belaying, building trust and effective communication throughout the event. After the introduction and a few practice scrambles, we took a break for pizza and networking. We were then able to put our newly learned skills to use as we took the gym! YEA members tackled walls of varying difficulties (with varying levels of success).

By all accounts the event was great for making connections, learning new skills, and having a lot of fun along the way!

YEA Leadership Weekend 2.0

YEA Leadership Weekend 2.0 (YLW 2.0) is designed to provide additional, more advanced resources to YLW alumni. For this continuation of YLW, we bring back Ralph Kison to facilitate and expand on the skills he taught at the existing YLW event. As YLW alumni, you’ve had the opportunity to use the resources and connections you gained at YLW to not only grow your professional careers, but develop your participation within ASHRAE. The purpose of YLW 2.0 is to continue that growth and development, and hopefully inspire even further leadership skills and aspirations!

The YLW 2.0 event will be held in Phoenix, AZ from February 23–25, 2018.

This event is open to any current ASHRAE member who has previously attended a YEA Leadership Weekend event and has not already attended YLW 2.0. Registration will open on Tuesday, October 17th at 11:00 am Eastern. Attendance is limited to 15 people and registration will be filled on a first-come first-served basis.

Please contact Rhiannon Masterson with any questions at rmasterson@ashrae.org or 678-539-1178. Click here for more info!

Leadership U

Have you ever wondered what ASHRAE Officers do at the ASHRAE Winter & Annual Conferences? Here is your chance to find out! Through Leadership U, a handful of YEA members are selected for each conference to be matched up with Society Officers and participate in all of their events and board meetings, including social activities. Leadership U not only allows you to experience a conference like an Officer, but it is also a great opportunity to network and form connections with those active in ASHRAE.

For more information Click Here! If you have any questions about Leadership U or the application process, please contact Rhiannon Masterson at rmasterson@ashrae.org or 678-539-1178.
