The President's Message

June 2018

Derek Bride

I would like to thank all of those that made it during the 2017/2018 ASHRAE Season. We had a great attendance and had some good Technical and Dinner Sessions. I’d like to thank all the Past Presidents who came out for our May dinner. I’d also like to thank Laurann Asklor and Christine Chipman of Shipman and Goodwin for educating us on the contractual side of our business.

I would also like to mention the ASHREA Golf Outing.  We heard lots of good feedback on the new course along with the earlier start time. We had great attendance and even better great weather! It appeared everyone had a good time. We plan on keeping the course the same again for next year.

I hope everyone has a great summer and we look forward to having a great 2018/2018 ASHRAE Season. It has been my pleasure to serve as the 2017-2018 CT ASHRAE President. Thank you for all your support, time and commitment.

Call for 2018-2019 Dinner Presentations

We're beginning to plan the 2018-2019 calendar! We’d love to hear what our members are interested in learning about next year.

If you or someone you know is interested in presenting at a dinner meeting or tech session, or if you have a topic idea, please contact Jason Urso (2018-2019 Programs Chair and President-Elect) at 413-572-3226. Presentations do not need to be complete at this point. We’re currently looking for presentation ideas and/or topics.

We are specifically looking to fill at least two meetings with consulting engineering firms showcasing one of their designs from a recent project. A field trip to the project location or a presentation of the project would be great!

We’re also considering booking a few offsite tours and/or venues. Please contact Jason Urso with possible tour locations or interesting venues too!

ASHRAE Golf Outing

The 2018 Golf Outing Recap!

Over the last several years, the CT Chapter has hosted a golf outing in the spring. Keeping with the tradition, the Outing was held the Friday of Memorial Day weekend which happened to be May 25th this year. Golfers and volunteers alike find this to be a great way to get an early start on an already long weekend! Participants were able to get an even earlier start this year due to an earlier scheduled shotgun start of 8:00 AM.

The change in tee time was a result of a change in venue. The Keney Park Golf Course in Windsor, CT was the location for this year’s outing and let’s just say everyone was very pleased with the new location! The morning was bright and sunny as volunteers arrived at the course to set up registration and sponsorship signage. As golfers arrived they helped themselves to breakfast sandwiches and coffee before settling into their golf carts.

Players could register as a single player or a foursome for this scramble-style event. We had 26 foursomes and 1 duo for the outing this year. Three members also volunteered their time selling raffle tickets, taking picutres and handing out refreshments throughout the day.

The day flew by and soon it was time for golfers to head back to the clubhouse for an open-bar cocktail hour and a lunch reception. A buffet-style lunch with a carving station was included with each player’s registration. During lunch, the winning team was awarded their prize along with Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin awards. After lunch, the raffle prizes were announced along with special thanks to sponsoring firms. The day concluded with volunteers and board players posing for a CT ASHRAE Board picture.

Due to overwhelmingly positive feedback, the Chapter plans to book next year’s Golf Outing for the same tee time and location. The event date for the 2019 Outing will most likely be Friday, May 24th.

Spring Softball Recap

Softball Game Recap

We're happy to report that 20 players showed up for our annual softball game. It was held on Thursday, June 7, 2018, which turned out to be a beautiful, sunny evening. Players and on-lookers enjoyed some pizza and refreshments before the start of the game. They were able to play 7 innings. One highlight was when Mike Dana hit an in-the-park homerun which might have atributed to the Home Team's win!

Below is a list of the teams and players.

Everyone had a great time at Wickham park that night, expecially with Clara Marques (dog in the picture) as their cheerleader. Hopefully more people can join us next year!

Student Activities

Student Activities Update

(From left to right: James Phillip, Jake Vlacich and Kayla Kirton)

This year a team of students from Quinnipiac University participated in the 2018 ASHRAE Design Competition. Jake Vlachich, James Phillip, and Kayla Kirton prepared design calculations and system selections for a 70k ft2 mixed use complex located in Arnavutkoy, Turkey. The students utilized modeling software and adhered to ASHRAE Standards while making informed design decisions based on extensive research and guidance from their advisors. This competition was a great means for the students to build on their studies and to become more familiar with our industry. The team enjoyed the challenge of the competition and even remarked that their work over the course of the school year had them considering an industry related career upon graduation. Congratulations to the team, and thank you for all of your hard work and dedication! Special thank you to their advisors Professor Grant Crawford, Stillman Jordan, and Ryan Martin, for dedicating your time to sharing your knowledge and expertise with the students.
