Leadership U
Leadership U is a program in which four YEA members are selected for an ASHRAE Winter or Annual Conference to be matched up with Society Officers and participate in all of their events and board meetings, including social activities. Leadership U not only allows these young professionals to experience a conference like an Officer, but it is also a great opportunity to network and form connections with those active in ASHRAE.
If you have questions about Leadership U, please contact YEA at [email protected] or 678-539-1178.

Program Overview
- If selected to participate in the program, you will have the costs of attending the conference (transportation, lodging and registration) covered by ASHRAE Society. Transportation includes the cost of your flight or gas mileage – whichever is less. Your hotel room will be covered for check in on Friday, and check out on Thursday. You will be registered for the conference and the Welcome Party, President's Luncheon, Members Night Out. Expenses not covered by the program include baggage fees, parking, taxis/public transportation, and food.
- Those selected to participate in the program will document their experiences and share them with the YEA Committee, their Chapter and their Region.
- The Leadership U Program Definition document provides a complete overview of the program.
Application Review
Applications are reviewed using a scoring system that awards a dedicated number of points to each question/qualification. In order to be considered for selection, an applicant must tally a minimum number of points. The scores from each reviewer are compiled and the four applicants with the highest scores are selected.
Program Requirements
The goal of Leadership U is to provide current YEA leaders with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and inspire their continued ASHRAE leadership. In order to qualify for selection, Leadership U applicants must meet the following requirements.
Required :
- ASHRAE chapter leadership
- Attendance at an ASHRAE Annual or Winter Conference. (Exceptions may be made if an applicant has fulfilled all other requirements and their score qualifies them for selection.)
Recommended :
- ASHRAE Regional leadership
- ASHRAE Society leadership, which can include Technical Committee participation
- Attendance at YEA Leadership Weekend or YEA Leadership International
In addition, your application will be reviewed based on your responses to the non-experience questions on the application: your overall YEA participation, how ASHRAE has benefitted you, your interest in participating in Leadership U, and your aspirations within ASHRAE.
Applications for the 2025 Winter Conference in Orlando are Now Open until October 9th, 2024!
ASHRAE Region LeaDRS Program
(Leadership Development through Regional Support)
LeaDRS is an ASHRAE regional program that encourages the development of future regional and Society leaders. Similar to YEA’s Leadership U program, the LeaDRS program allows a Region to select an ASHRAE member to shadow their Director and Regional Chair (DRC) at an ASHRAE conference. The LeaDRS program is open to all ASHRAE members (it is not restricted to YEA members). The LeaDRS program is run, funded, and administered by each Region.
Please review the LeaDRS program document for a complete description of the program.
If you are interested in applying for your Region’s LeaDRS program, please contact your Region’s DRC directly:

Refrigerants Will Be Replaced by Air, Korean Researchers Say
The Korea Energy Research Institute has developed, for the first time in the country, a refrigeration technology that uses air as a refrigerant instead of freon gas, hydrofluorocarbons and other refrigerants that cause global warming. Researchers have successfully developed an ultra-high-speed integrated compression and expansion system using advanced design technology. The system is capable of cooling down to -100°C (-148°F), so it is expected to have wide applications in semiconductor processes, biotechnology, pharmaceutical storage and more. Read more

DOE Issues Model Energy Code Determinations for Residential and Commercial Buildings
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued its final determination that the updated model building energy codes, the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2019, will increase energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings. DOE analysis estimates the following national average savings for buildings meeting the updated code (as compared to the previous respective editions).
Each State has until July 28, 2023 to certify their state building codes meet the updated editions of the IECC and Standard 90.1. Supporting technical analysis, as well as links to the Federal docket and public comments received, are available here.
Connecticut is in the process of adopting the 2021 IECC. Expectations are that it will be approved by October with an implementation date of Jan 1, 2022
DOE Intends to Issue a Funding Opportunity that Accelerates the Renovation of Buildings with Energy-Efficient Innovations
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) have announced they intend to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) called "Advanced Building Construction (ABC) – 2021." ABC – 2021 will fund research intended to accelerate the renovation and construction of affordable, appealing, and energy-efficient buildings, contributing to a carbon-neutral building economy in America by 2050. DOE Updates State and Local Fact Sheets on ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC
The U.S. Department of Energy has assessed recent editions of ASHRAE 90.1 and the IECC to quantify the associated energy & cost savings. These analyses take into account varying state-level conditions, such as incremental costs, utility rates, climatic conditions and construction trends. The fact sheets for each U.S. state, as well as certain major metropolitan areas, show the specific energy and cost savings associated with adopting the 2021 IECC and ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2019. The fact sheets provide an overview of the expected savings to homeowners and building owners. Links to these fact sheets can be found on the DOE website here.
