For those of you who were able to brave the weather and flights delays, I hope you enjoyed the 2016 AHR in mostly sunny and relatively warm Orlando, FL. I had the opportunity to work the exhibit hall again this year and from what I could see from the packed isles, it was an extremely well-attended event. We also had some good news come from one of the Society meetings. Our own Jason Urso has been elected backup Membership Promotion RVC for Region 1. The good news for the CT chapter is that this means, barring any unforeseen events, we’ll still have Jason’s undivided attention for the next few years. For any who know Jason you understand the time and energy he puts in volunteer roles with our chapter. You’ll also know that while we are excited for his apparent future serving in larger roles for Ashrae, we’re not quite ready to let him go just yet. Make sure you take the opportunity to congratulate Jason when you next see him.

In additional volunteer news, I’m happy to announce Richard Melo has accepted the position of Chapter Historian. The position is an important one to our chapter and finding a suitable replacement for Julie Williams since her retirement to Maine this past year has been a priority for the BOG and Officers. Richard relocated from the Boston Chapter this past year and generously volunteered his time and efforts to us. Please make sure you thank, welcome, and congratulate Richard when you see him. Based on the time I’ve been able to spend with him, he’ll be a valuable asset to our chapter for some time to come.

January’s meeting was an update on the Connecticut Energy Code. This has become a standard yearly meeting for us over the past few seasons since the code adoption has been taking a while. While the time frame for adoption can be seen as frustrating and annoying, the bright spot is we get plenty of opportunities for our resident Code expert, Fred Wajcs, to bring us up to speed. Fred does an excellent job each and every time he has the floor and this past month was certainly no exception. Thank you Fred for so generously donating your time to the Connecticut Ashrae Chapter once again.

The February meeting will include a Back to Basics Tech Session on Fans and Blowers provided by our own Bill Dunn. The Dinner Session will be on System Effects done by Ron Michael of the Loren Cook Company, so mark your calendars for February 11th and check the newsletter for additional details.

Speaking of Bill Dunn, our nominating committee for Officers and BOG for the 2016-2017 season has convened. If you are, or you know anyone else who may be interested in serving on either the Nominating Committee chaired by Bill, or on serving as an Officer or Board Member, please contact Bill at [email protected].

As always, if anyone is interested in joining a committee, chairing a committee, or want to advertise an upcoming event, please contact us. Also, keep checking the website for details on future meetings, events and announcements.

Tech Session: Back to Basics - Fans & Blowers

This presentation is designed to be both an introduction for young HVAC professionals and a review for experienced designers. It covers the basic principles of commercial fans and blowers. Topics covered are: the different types of fan impellers; the different types of fans; most common applications; fan curves; the Fan Laws, especially the impact on motor horsepower; routine maintenance requirements; belt-drive vs. direct-drive; Electronically Commuted Motors; and proper inlet & outlet conditions.

Since 2001, Bill Dunn has been the Engineering Marketing Manager for Air Equipment LLC, a manufacturers’ rep firm located in East Hartford, CT. Bill has a total of 29 years’ experience in the HVAC industry. In 2006-2007 he was President of the Connecticut Chapter of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-conditioning Engineers), and he regularly gives lectures on HVAC air systems for Construction Management courses at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT.

Sustainability News

Greetings:

As the chapter knows, we have been undertaking a project at the Columbus House over the past year and we are looking to have that work completed this upcoming year. We had some great members volunteer their time to provide a HVAC survey and recommendations for energy efficiency upgrades at the facility. Opportunities we found are as follows:

Look at boiler replacement with potentially new condensing boilers
New hot water pumps and drives
Look at a lighting retrofit to LED’s
Retro commissioning of the HVAC system
Motor replacements at existing HVAC units

The committee would like to undertake a small retro commissioning effort for the project. If any members are interested in supporting this effort, please send an e-mail to [email protected] We would also entertain any of the projects listed above as we would like to complete this over the next 4-5 months. Also, the committee is looking for members to join so if you have an interest in being part of the sustainability committee, please drop us a line.

RP Focus- Information and Appreciation:

We are 4 months into the 2015-2016 ASHRAE calendar year and the ASHAE RP Campaign has received $1500 from 18 of our members. We still have quite a ways to go to meet our goal $14,000, but we are getting closer.

So as 2016 begins, think of what impact you would like to make this year. Then go to the Research Promotion page on the CTASHRAE website, click the link for the donation form and make a contribution. As a reminder to our colleagues at Trane, make a note on your contribution form that you work for Trane and Trane will match your donation. You don’t have to do anything. ASHRAE will take care of the details.

Raising awareness of what RP does and seeking contributions is a big part of what the RP committee does. Equally important is acknowledging those who have taken to heart the vital role ASHRAE research has on our industry and offered their support. During the January meeting we will be taking a moment to publicly acknowledge those organizations and individuals who decided to make a difference for the 2014-2015 year. Please join us in showing our appreciation.

In addition, a table top display will be set up at the January meeting. The display will provide recognition to those who contributed last year as well as raise awareness for what research promotion does. So please stop by.

ASHRAE Recognizes Members for Outstanding Industry and Society Achievements

ATLANTA – Fifty-four people were recognized for their contributions to ASHRAE and the industry at the Society’s 2016 Winter Conference, Jan. 23-27, Orlando, Fla.

The F. Paul Anderson Award, ASHRAE’s highest for technical achievement, is given for notable achievement of outstanding services performed in the HVAC&R field. The recipient is Presidential Member Thomas E. Watson, Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, director of the Daikin Learning Institution, Daikin Applied, Staunton, Virginia.

The ASHRAE Hall of Fame honors deceased members of the Society who have made milestone contributions to the growth of ASHRAE-related technology or the development of ASHRAE as a society. Inductees are Calvin D. MacCracken, who with more than 200 inventions and 80 patents is best known for his pioneering work in off peak cooling energy costs savings and energy conserving options in ice rinks. His inventions include flexible duct heating/cooling, a roller-type hot dog cooker, comfort controls for the Apollo astronauts' space suits, plastic mat ice rink, and roll-out solar collectors; and John Edwin Starr, a pioneer in development of small sized refrigeration systems and refrigeration by pipeline from central stations, as well as founder and the first president of The American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE), an ASHRAE predecessor society, in 1904-05.

Fellow ASHRAE is a membership grade that recognizes members who have attained distinction and made substantial contributions in HVAC&R such as education, research, engineering design and consultation, publications and mentoring. The Society elevated 17 members to the grade of Fellow:

The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by ASHRAE members who have successfully applied innovative building design. Their designs incorporate ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and indoor air quality and serve to communicate innovative systems design. Winning projects are selected from entries earning regional awards. First place recipients are:

Benjamin A. Skelton, P.E., BEMP, president, Cyclone Energy Group, Chicago, Ill., in the new commercial buildings category for the Walgreens Net Zero Store, Evanston, Ill. The building is owned by Walgreen Co.
Dylan T. Connelly, associate, Integral Group, Oakland, Calif., in the existing commercial buildings category for DPR Construction’s San Francisco Net Positive Energy Office. The building is owned by DPR Construction.
Nicolas Lemire, Ing., HFDP, president/principal, Pageau Morel and Associates, Montreal, Quebec, in the new educational facilities category for the Anne-Marie Edward Science Building at John Abbott College, Sainte-Anne-De-Bellevue, Quebec. The building is owned by the college.
Ken Warren, P.E., capital project manager, Port of Seattle (Wash.), in the new industrial facilities or processes category for the Sea-Tac Airport Pre-Conditioned Air project. The building is owned by the Port of Seattle.
Jonathan M. Heller, P.E., principal engineer, Ecotope Inc., Seattle, Wash., receives first place in the residential category for the Stack House Apartments. The building is owned by Stack House Acquisition LLC.

The ASHRAE Student Design Competition focused on a three-story classroom and office building in Doha, Qatar.

First place recipients in the HVAC System Selection are from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Team members are Brianna Brass, currently seeking a Master’s of Architectural Engineering degree, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Matthew Easlon, Feinschule Hagwon, Gwangju, Korea; Mary Kleinsasser, currently seeking a Master’s of Architectural Engineering degree, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Ben MacKenzie, mechanical engineering intern, Affiliated Engineers, Madison, Wis.; and Rachel Obenland, currently seeking a Master’s of Architectural Engineering degree, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

First place recipients in the HVAC Design Calculations also are from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Team members are Kristin Hanna, currently seeking a Master’s of Architectural Engineering degree, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Garrett Johnson; Mark Wilder, mechanical intern, M.E. Group, Omaha, Neb.

First place in the category of Integrated Sustainable Building Design goes to a team from Portland State University. Team members are Krestina Aziz, architectural designer, Otak, Portland, Ore.; Adam Buchholz, estimator, Johnson Air Products, Portland, Ore.; Nicole Dunbar, mechanical designer, Mazzetti Inc., Portland, Ore.; Lee H. Han, mechanical engineer, PAE Consulting Engineers Inc., Seattle, Wash.; Joel Joiner, project manager, Hydro-Temp Mechanical, Wilsonville, Ore.; Osman Sarper Kucuk; Blake Reynolds, mechanical designer, Interface Engineering, Portland, Ore.; Natalie Sherwood, mechanical designer, Interface Engineering, Portland, Ore.; Huy Tran, CLEARResult, Portland, Ore.; and Alex Wilson, graduate student, Portland State University.

For the Applied Engineering Challenge, students were required to design a collapsible portable conditioned shelter that can be assembled in the field to assist in the treatment of a victim of heat illness, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The first place Applied Engineering Challenge recipients are from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo: Miren Aizpitarte, project engineer, Critchfield Mechanical Inc., San Jose, Calif.; Cinthya Mendez, mechanical engineer, Western Allied Mechanical, Menlo Park, Calif.; Julia Stone, mechanical facilities engineer, Intel, Chandler, Ariz.; and Willis Tang, design engineer, ACCO Engineered Systems, Glendale, Calif.

The E.K. Campbell Award of Merit honors an individual for outstanding service and achievement in teaching and is presented by the Life Members Club. The recipient is Michael M. Ohadi, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, a professor of mechanical engineering and co-founder of the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.

The ASHRAE Award for Distinguished Public Service recognizes members who have performed outstanding public service in their community and, in doing so, have helped to improve the public image of the engineer. The recipient is Erich Binder, president, Erich Binder Consulting Ltd., Calgary, Alberta.

The John F. James International Award recognizes a member who has done the most to enhance the Society's international presence. The recipient is Florentino Roson Rodriguez, Ing., president, Supercontrols S.A., Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The ASHRAE Pioneers of Industry Award recognizes deceased individuals who have made milestone contributions to the growth of HVAC&R. Recipients are Daniel Livingston Holden (1837- 1924), who was a charter member of The American Society of Refrigerating Engineers and a pioneer of the commercial refrigeration industry.; and Benjamin Franklin Sturtevant (1833 – 1890), the founder of the air-side HVAC industry, having invented the equipment and starting the first company specializing in engineering and manufacturing of these systems.

Honorary Members, elected by the Board of Directors are defined as notable persons of preeminent professional distinction. Recipients are P.A. Hancock, Ph.D., Provost Distinguished Research Professor, Pegasos Professor and University Trustee chair, the University of Central Florida, Orlando; and Terry M. Manon, who retired from the Trane Co., in 2009 as director of Trane commercial systems air handling systems. He resides in Danville, Kentucky.

What do you do now and what are you planning for the future?

Sales/Estimation/Distribution HVAC related products. I am a warehouse and plan and spec manufacturer's representative. I'm still too young for retirement so the near future forecast is to stay healthy and work smart to pay for my kids college and hopeful retirement.

How do you unwind from a busy day at work?

I enjoy exercising. Running and crossfit are my favorite forms.

What are your hobbies, or things your enjoy doing in your spare time?

Most times I feel like a taxi driver taking my kids to and from sports.

Did or do you have a mentor who has helped shape your caree and who you are in business? If so, who?

Many excellent customers have shared in my sales education. My father was also a salesman and business owner and I was the only one of six kids that went into sales. I would give him much of the credit/blame depending on your point of veiw.

What is your favorite genre of music?

Country

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

Lasagna - it's excellent cold or hot. Unfortunately it's not that great for you, so ultimately if that is all i had it would be a short existence, but a happy one. It sure tastes good!

Rules to live by in business?

Be a good person. Check everything twice. Go with your gut. Stay away from something/someone if you are vey uncomfortable with it/them. Try to laugh. Lastly, put your family before the business. You can always get a new job, but your family is irreplaceable.

What is your favorite book or movie (you can name both)?

Braveheart - many men's favorite.
